Easing the Transition: Building Better Bridges between Developmental and College-Level Math
Parmer, Penelope; Cutler, Jared
Journal of Applied Research in the Community College, v15 n1 p37-45 Fall 2007
This article reports research involving collaboration between a developmental studies department and a mathematics department in an effort to increase the academic success of developmental students who transition into college-level math. Three separate projects were conducted with former developmental math students currently enrolled in an introductory math course. Their performance was compared with peers who had not taken developmental math, and problematic content areas were identified. These projects included analyses of pre-course assessments, analyses of exams and final grades, and analyses of student surveys. This collaborative effort provides an example of how developmental studies departments and other academic departments can work together to better serve students who require remedial education.
