Logging on and Letting out: Using Online Social Networks to Grieve and to Mourn
Carroll, Brian; Landry, Katie
Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society, v30 n5 p341-349 Oct 2010
The purpose of this article is to explore how and why younger Internet users of social networking platforms such as MySpace and Facebook maintain connections with those who have died or been killed. This article, therefore, examines the blurring or blending of interpersonal communication and mass communication via the web as what once was very private communication--messages to the deceased--becomes very public. The findings suggest that these online social networks enable or empower individuals marginalized by more traditional forms of memorialization. (Contains 3 tables and 1 figure.)
