Design Your Own Opera!... Online!
General Music Today, v24 n1 p41-42 Oct 2010
This article discusses how to design an opera on the internet and introduces a site that offers the educational keys to the musical kingdom when it comes to unlocking a child's interest in opera. The combination of attractive, animated artwork, fun interactivity, and sound musical learning make this site very useful in a general music classroom. Not only does "Design Your Own Opera" teach children about the music and story of Hansel and Gretel, the site is also enriched by the "Back Stage" feature. Children, teachers, and parents can explore facts about the composer, the orchestra, opera, classical singers, and fairy tales. The "Design Your Own Opera" project is an innovative approach to audience outreach and music education. It was produced by the Los Angeles-based Creative Kids Education Foundation in cooperation with KUSC Classical Radio. Two effective ways to incorporate it into a general music/opera lesson is to project the live site for the whole class using a computer projector, or have children work in pairs at classroom computer stations.
