Engaging Pedagogy: One Student's Lesson in Teaching and Learning

In this article, the author shares his own learning on the challenges and the responsibilities as a student and as an instructor in the process of engaged learning. The author shares that his hope of telling his experience is to prompt educators to think about teaching and learning in ways that challenge some traditional assumptions about students engagement and learning. In short, this experience prompted him to rethink how educators reach students--in and out of the classroom--and to deconstruct the assumptions held by some in student affairs that: (a) students must be at fault for their lack of engagement, and, contradictorily, at the same time; (b) the faculty is responsible for the lack of student engagement; or (c) engaging students in (and out) of the classroom is formulaic and undemanding work. And whereas education is no doubt an effort that requires commitment from both the educator and the learner, perhaps as educators--individually and corporately--they need to look inward more often.
