Students Stand for Social Change

Many high-school students today are aware of the state of the U.S., as well as the state of neighboring countries. Their views and opinions are often heard in conversation and debate, so the author decided to allow high-school juniors and seniors in her advanced art class to explore a contemporary issue through artistic expression. She began with a presentation and discussion that revolved around the Social Realism movement of the 1930s. She asked students to each bring in a recent article that focused on an issue of today about which they were passionate and reuse a full sheet of cardboard in a creative way. The students returned to class with their articles and sketches. The author stresses that it was a powerful and exciting experience to see the process, exploration, and results created by these students. The project shows that these future citizens are aware, involved, and creative problem-solvers.
