Art-Rageous Bulletin Boards: A Palette to Pursue
Baggett, Paige
Arts & Activities, v146 n5 p24-25 Jan 2010
Consider the task of creating bulletin boards for K-12 classrooms. Consider the corkboard a canvas for creating and promoting interest in and learning about the arts among students, parents and faculty. Consider it a palette to pursue. Undergraduate pre-service elementary education majors created these visual representations, using traditional bulletin boards as teaching tools about various artists. Viewed by all who travel through the halls in the College of Education, these art-rageous displays promote knowledge of and interest in the arts. Students enrolled in the author's class, "Art in the Elementary School," design, create and display art-rageous bulletin boards for personal learning and to promote the arts among faculty and students. The "Collaborative Skills Rubric" is a springboard for discussing these behaviors before, after and during the activity. One could require students to evaluate each other and themselves at the midpoint and completion of their project. Meanwhile, the "Art-rageous Bulletin Board Rubric" may be applied to emphasize the content and artistic elements and principles that meet the learning objectives. In her class, following the introductory visualization and discussion, notable artists are assigned and cooperative groups are formed. Required elements are listed and discussed, and rubrics are reviewed. The rubrics, which should always be provided at the onset of the project, provide a great deal of motivation and structure for quality projects. As due dates are posted, a fury of art-rageous activity ensues.
