Grant Us Some Art: How a Large-Scale Sculpture becomes a Reality
Greenwood, Nate
Arts & Activities, v147 n4 p32-33, 46 May 2010
In an effort to create a collaborative, grand-scale project that would not only showcase the talent of young artists, but also serve as a reminder that art is a significant part of the human experience, the author asked Cameron VanDyke, a working, professional furniture maker and sculptor, to work with junior-high art classes to collaboratively design and build a permanent outdoor sculpture to be installed in a high-traffic location on the campus. The process was designed to give the students a real-world experience of how a large-scale outdoor sculpture becomes a reality--from the concept, to the model, to selecting a site, to the construction and painting, and finally to the installation. The look, style and feel of the final project was purposely left unresolved at the beginning, due to the collaborative process Cameron wanted to experience with the students. In this article, the author describes the project and how the students get involved with the design and model-making process.
