Profile of an Engaged Sociology Major

In this research note, the authors report on an exploratory study of the profile of an engaged sociology major. The purpose of this note is to assess which factors relate to senior majors' self-perceived, overall engagement in the discipline. Possible factors include demographic variables, attitudes about learning, and academic or study behaviors. Empirical research on levels and correlates of engagement in higher education, and sociology specifically, is limited. The authors begin with a review of some national and local National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) data on behavioral engagement. Next they summarize a small number of studies that involved sociology students and looked at participation, a variable conceptually related to engagement. Finally, they note some local and national research on the reasons students give for selecting sociology as their major. (Contains 3 tables and 4 footnotes.)
