Performing Theory: Singing Theory in a Communication Course
Schrader, Stuart
Communication Teacher, v19 n2 p57-61 Apr 2005
A good story is one that matters to both the teller and audience. It is through shared story telling that people come to know the world around them. In order to help students recognize theoretical application and the effects of their own personal perspectives within a complex multi-layered story, the author's examinations in a communication course have students engage in performative action. A portion of each examination asks students to connect a performance process with a theory. This article discusses the author's third exam wherein students create an original song that directly reflects a specific communication theory.
