War Veterans' Memoirs as Narrated to Students: An Intergenerational Service-Learning Project for Interpersonal Communication
Whitfield, Toni S.; Conis, Annick D.
Communication Teacher, v20 n1 p23-27 Jan 2006
Faculty members constantly struggle to integrate "learning" and "doing" in the classroom in order to increase their students' understanding of course concepts--the interpersonal communication class is no different. The Library of Congress Veterans History Project seemed perfectly adapted to the goal of bringing interpersonal communication theories and concepts to life by providing students with an opportunity to work from a skills-based learning approach, within the boundaries of a relationship in development. This article presents an activity for interpersonal communication which aims to increase understanding of interpersonal communication theories and concepts, to apply interpersonal skills studied in class, and to develop an intergenerational relationship by means of an interview project. It also describes the Library of Congress Veteran History Project's goal and the steps in starting the intergenerational service-learning project for interpersonal communication. A list of references and suggested readings is included.
