Jones, John A.
Communication Teacher, v21 n2 p49-53 Apr 2007
Students, including advanced students, often lack the knowledge, confidence, and experience to participate effectively in competitive, bartering, or conflict situations. The concept that influencing skills are not limited to those in authority and can be learned comprises the framework for this teaching activity. The credible and adaptable materials offered in the publication "Influence without Authority" provide the base for this activity. Students discover that reciprocity can often be gained from others through exchanges that are not based on authority. Student evaluations of classroom materials, student enthusiasm, and personal application by the instructor led to the development of this activity. This teaching activity expands communication resources, critical and creative thinking skills, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities. It works well in many classes and contexts, ranging from introductory courses though advanced organizational, conflict management, and persuasion classes to adult education offerings.
