What Students in a Higher Pedagogical Educational Institution Think about the Reforms and Innovations in the Sphere of Education

Present-day Russia is characterized by a resolute transition to the innovative path of development in all spheres of economic and social life, and that includes the sphere of education. The processes that took place in Russian education in the 1990s, which can be characterized as a time of "precipitous innovation," were, to some extent, an unanticipated result of the abrupt social, economic, and sociocultural changes that were manifested in the form of intensive creative activity on the part of both individual educators and entire pedagogical collectives, in the search for ways to modernize education under the new conditions. A combination of the informal innovation movement and the state's purpose-directed educational policy became possible under the conditions of the Conception of the Modernization of Russian Education for the Period to 2010 that is now being implemented, the Federal Target Program for the Development of Education for 2006 to 2010, and also the national project "Education," according to which state support is to be provided first and foremost to creative educators and innovative institutions of education. Under such conditions, it is essential to train students in pedagogical institutions to engage in "innovative pedagogical activity." That kind of training, of course, requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of the state's current educational policy, the main areas and essential nature of the transformations to be carried out, and their role and significance in accomplishing the tasks of the country's social and economic development. Results of a study carried out in 2006 and 2007 to determine the decree of knowledgeability of students in their fifth year of study at the university (the sample consisted of 117 people) concerning the changes under way in the sphere of education revealed that their understanding of these things was extremely superficial.
