Business Education in Russia: Characteristics of the New Generation of Businesspeople

With the end of the period of initial capital accumulation, characterized by its typical tumultuous repartition of property and free-for-all, the task of "effective" management of acquired assets has come to be of paramount importance. There is an increasing demand for highly qualified top-level and mid-level managers, giving impetus to the active development of the market of business education, whether short-term, mid-term, or long-term, including various programs and MBAs. It has been estimated by specialists that by 2012 the annual influx of students enrolled in business education programs in Russia could run as high as 200,000. However, despite the rapid development of the market of business education and the rise in the overall level of professionalism in the business community, the shortage of highly qualified managers is increasingly mentioned as a major obstacle to the development of the Russian economy, its innovative character and ability to compete. This article presents a study which has been based on a survey of entrepreneurs and managers who are pursuing an MBA degree in the Academy of the National Economy under the Government of the Russian Federation. The academy is ranked in first place in the number of such programs, and it is satisfying up to half the needs of the Russian MBA market.
