Talk Like a Scientist
Marcum-Dietrich, Nanette
Science Teacher, v77 n4 p43-47 Apr 2010
In the scientific community, the symposium is one formal structure of conversation. Scientists routinely hold symposiums to gather and talk about a common topic. To model this method of communication in the classroom, the author designed an activity in which students conduct their own science symposiums. This article presents the science symposium as a useful classroom tool and includes rubrics and tips for incorporating symposiums in the classroom. Through these experiences, students learn to communicate like real scientists. (Contains 4 figures and 1 online resource.)
