Using the NAIS Guidelines for Librarians as a Self-Assessment Tool
Weber, Ann
Knowledge Quest, v38 n2 p53-59 Nov-Dec 2009
In the past, this author used a generic self-assessment form designed for administrators at her school, yet administration is only a part of what she does. The administrative self-assessment tool does not give her an opportunity to reflect on other important responsibilities of a professionally trained school librarian. Therefore, the author adopted the familiar format of her administrator's assessment and incorporated the NAIS guidelines to develop a tool recognizable to her school but revolutionary in content. In this article, the author lists the fourteen criteria of the "NAIS Guidelines of Professional Practice for Librarians" that could serve as an excellent assessment tool. She describes how she used the NAIS guidelines assessment tool for self-assessment and how the "NAIS Guidelines of Professional Practice for Librarians" has articulated the responsibilities of independent school librarians.
