Minding the Gap: Filling a Void in Community College Leadership Development

The end of the twentieth century heralded a period of anxiety among community college trustees and leaders over impending shortfalls in leadership positions. The tremendous growth of public community colleges in the 1960s made them particularly susceptible to the retirement of aging baby boomers. To assist in developing and selecting professionals to address this gap, the 21st Century Educational Leadership Profiles Project was created. This project aimed to increase the understanding of leadership attributes and the work styles of successful college presidents, particularly in an environment that requires skills in management of change. This article describes the development of a community college leadership program that integrates interpersonal competency building with the process of personality and work-style profiling and individualized instruction in targeted areas for improvement.
