Sharing Summer Reading Establishes Community in the Classroom
Gillespie, Joanne S.
Middle School Journal (J3), v41 n5 p29-34 May 2010
Rising eighth graders are expected to finish at least five books during the summer. Before summer vacation, the author instructs her students to keep a list of the books they completed on a piece of paper including the titles and authors and let them create and design an attractive way to inform everyone about the books they read. This article illustrates how rewarding it is for a teacher when students eagerly share information about their summer reading and select books based on the recommendations of their peers, which in turn transform into a cheerful, vibrant, welcoming environment. The author shares how students become better acquainted with one another when they write poems and stories about their personal preferences, feelings, and experiences. She concludes that by being actively engaged, students recognize that they have a lot to offer and they start the year by building a vibrant, cohesive language arts community. (Contains 1 figure.)
