Cross-Level Collaboration: Students and Teachers Learning from Each Other
Phegley, Missy Nieveen; Oxford, Janelle
English Journal, v99 n5 p27-34 May 2010
Teachers live to inspire and be inspired. Sadly, most high school teachers work alone in the confines of their teaching assignments and tight, chaotic schedules, while many college professors teach and conduct research within the confines of their institutions, seldom reaching out to fellow instructors at different institutions that serve different populations. In an effort to feel connected with the professional world, many teachers live for their professional reading to validate their efforts and inspire others to continue their journeys. Struggling with how best to teach the authors' respective students as they made the transition from their current academic experience to the next step in their lives, the authors took inspiration from Thomas C. Thompson's book titled, "Teaching Writing in High School and College: Conversations and Collaborations," and its emphasis on collaboration. Knowing that their students had different yet relevant needs, the authors ventured on their journey together, growing as teachers and improving their students' skills. This article illustrates how the authors worked together to design writing and response activities using social networking and webcams to enhance students' writing and collaboration skills.
