What Makes Your Wheels Turn?
DiJulio, Betsy
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v109 n9 p19-21 May-Jun 2010
In the author's ongoing attempt to design creative challenges that are relevant, based on observational drawing, and that place students squarely in the creative problem-solving driver's seat, she chose cars and engines as subjects. After all, they have a parking lot full of them and their administrative staff members, who park side-by-side, were more than willing to pop their hoods. The author decided to challenge students to: (1) select a car and a part of an engine that represented aspects of their personalities; and (2) connect the cars and engines in an innovative way using compositional strategies to explore the themes of their choice. This article illustrates how this creative challenge improved the students' careful observation and strong drawing skills. (Contains 1 online resource.)
