Reimagining the Community College
Jones-Kavalier, Barbara; Roueche, John
Community College Journal, v80 n5 p30-32, 34-37 Apr-May 2010
Reform is another word for that which has challenged community college leaders for too long: the need to reorganize, to transform, and to change. Challenges such as declining funds and increasing accountability are unquestionable certainties for community college leaders who must face daily the realities about them. For them it is not a story about realities; it is a story about creativity. It is a story of hope for those who are still uncertain about how to reform and who are hesitant about taking the necessary steps to change those practices that have outlived their organizational usefulness. The movement to reimagine the community college gained momentum in 2008 with the publication of "The Creative Community College: Leading Change Through Innovation." This article outlines different stories of community college leaders who successfully harnessed creativity to transform their organizations. It introduces ideas which serve as a reminder that possibilities for change still exist within and are symbolic of the creative community college. The lessons learned define creativity as developing partnerships, building ladders of success, and transforming cultures.
