Waging a Battle to Promote Reading
Dix, Suzanne Liacos
Library Media Connection, v28 n5 p20-22 Mar-Apr 2010
As advocates for reading, librarians cannot help but love a reading program. In this article, the author talks about the Battle of the Books, a reading enrichment program that had been in place since 1996. Battle of the Books promotes reading among middle school students by offering interesting books and a trivia-type competition. The author referred to many sources but none was more thorough than the North Carolina School Library Media Association's Battle of the Books Manual (www.ncslma.org/BookCompetitions/BoBstate/bobinfo.htm). Based on their many years of expertise (they began the program in 1991), they have found that "through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base." The author shares how librarians can begin this program. (Contains 6 resources.)
