Kamman, Margaret L.; Long, Susanne K.
Journal of Special Education Leadership, v23 n1 p21-29 Mar 2010
The need for high-quality teachers in special education and the persistent shortage of teachers beckon school leaders to find ways to support beginning teachers. Induction is one mechanism that has gained widespread attention for its potential in addressing beginning teacher quality and retention. In this article, the authors describe one district's intense induction program, specifically designed for special educators and focused on developing teacher quality and increasing teacher retention. Features of the Special School District of St. Louis County program are highlighted to assist leaders in strengthening induction programs to better support the unique needs of beginning special educators.
