Democracy during Hard Times
van der Bogert, Rebecca
Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education, v105 n1 p146-169 Apr 2006
The author's superintendency has been like a good marriage. Both she and the school community feel blessed to have had a true partnership built on mutually held beliefs and convictions, and to have had an opportunity to dream and make their dreams come true. Like most marriages, however, it has been a tremendous amount of work as they have discovered how difficult it is to bring their dreams to fruition. There have been rocky moments when their beliefs were challenged both externally and internally, and even times when she questioned if the relationship was the best for "the children"--the students of the district. At the foundation of everything, though, there has been an incredible opportunity for growth and learning about the human experience--what it means to stay united at times of joy and sorrow, and how to accept one another's frailties and celebrate their strengths. In this chapter, the author shares her joys, struggles, and lessons learned that surround a deep commitment to trying to model democratic ideals in her leadership style.
