The Education of a Freshman President
Kunkel, Thomas
Trusteeship, v18 n2 p29-32 Mar-Apr 2010
In the summer of 2008, the author had become president of St. Norbert, a nationally ranked and respected liberal-arts college founded in 1898 by the Norbertine order of Catholic priests. It is the only Norbertine institution of higher learning in the world, and the order's three core values--(1) "communio" or a deeply felt sense of community; (2) service to others; and (3) reflection--are likewise the core values of St. Norbert College. Those characteristics, as well as St. Norbert's strong commitment to its Catholic and liberal-arts missions, made the job extremely appealing when the author was brought into the search for the institution's seventh president. In this article, the author shares his experience as a freshman college president and provides a primer on what it means to be a first-time leader. As a freshman president at St. Norbert College, the author learned that college presidents must juggle many roles--and that which ones and when are often entirely out of the president's control.
