Assessing the Effectiveness of "Making the Right Diagnosis: The Need for Spirometry"
Make, Barry; Friedlander, Adam; Lundstrom, Natalie
Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions, v30 n1 p72-73 Win 2010
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is expected to increase in prevalence in the coming decades. The evolving nature of COPD outcome assessment and therapies, as well as the increasing societal burden of COPD, have created a significant challenge for primary-care physicians. As a result, a continuing medical education/continuing education program called "Making the Right Diagnosis: The Need for Spirometry" was created. The program's purpose was to facilitate earlier diagnosis and better management of patients suffering from COPD. It was designed to inform primary care providers, family physicians, and allied health professionals how to recognize, diagnose, and manage the heterogeneity of COPD adequately. This article illustrates the improvements of those who participated in the program particularly in recognizing their limitations with respect to spirometry and how they appear motivated to close such gap.
