Time, Effort, and Care: The Challenge of Retaining Students until They Meet Their Academic Goals
Murray, Corey
Community College Journal, v80 n4 p34-35 Feb-Mar 2010
As states slash funding for education and other services in the face of shrinking budgets, the question is not how to find students, but how to help them once enrolled. Linda Hagedorn, director of the Research Institute for Studies in Higher Education at Iowa State University, states that instead of being concerned about where community colleges are going to find students, she thinks the bigger challenge now is, what are community colleges going to do with the large number of students who are seeking their services in times of shrinking budgets? A former community college instructor and administrator, Hagedorn has spent much of her professional life examining the challenges community colleges face. Though retention presents a challenge for any institution of higher learning, she says, the problem is especially acute for two-year colleges, largely because of the vast array of learners such colleges attract. Given the budget crunch, is there anything community colleges can do? In this article, the author shares Hagedorn's advice on what community colleges can do, which is summed up in three words: time, effort, and care.
