Technology in the Piano Lab: Band-in-a-Box--An Interview with E.J. Choe
Nardo, Rachel; Choe, E. J.
General Music Today, v23 n3 p48-50 2010
This article presents an interview with E.J. Choe, director of the Music Academy at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, on how she became involved in the use of technology to teach piano and how the software program Band-in-a-Box has helped her in teaching her students. Choe shares that instead of sitting at a grand piano in her private studio, she now teaches in a piano lab with 16 Roland digital keyboards equipped with flat screen and wireless keyboard computers loaded with educational software. She mentions that the software can be used in many ways--not just for composition, accompanying, and improvisation, but students can train their ear by listening to different song samples that employ different harmonic progression. She stresses that by adding this computer software in the piano lab, students will experience much more than just playing the piano. They will have a great time working on the creative assignments by getting hands-on experience with Band-in-a-Box. (Contains 6 figures.)
