Top Ten Reasons to Seek Professional Challenges
Salsberry, Trudy
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership, v4 n3 p155-157 Jul 2006
For three weeks, this author served as a stateside evaluator conducting school site visits at four Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DODDs) located in The Netherlands. Those three weeks in The Netherlands were filled with forming new relationships with team members at each school site, learning about the unique needs of children who are transferred nearly every three years, and working with teachers and administrators who are living in a foreign country and experiencing very diverse contexts. What she learned from her "professional challenge" as an overseas evaluator went far beyond how to serve in that evaluator role. She decided that the top 10 reasons for seeking professional challenges are: (1) Enhancing professional development; (2) Modeling what one believes; (3) Remaining humble; (4) Experiencing another culture; (5) Breaking routines; (6) Increasing one's range of opportunities; (7) Affirming one's value and credibility; (8) Learning about new practices; (9) Appreciating one's current role; and (10) Appearing more exotic to her family and colleagues.
