It Takes Two
Olson, Catherine Applefeld
Teaching Music, v17 n5 p42-44, 46 Feb 2010
They have worked as professional musicians, taught in several school districts, and even created a children's educational music video series, all while raising five kids of their own. But as they move into yet another chapter of their careers as music educators, Chuck and Mary Lynn McMichael are still crazy after all these years. Crazy about teaching and inspiring young people through music, that is. The couple, who recently relocated to Port Lavaca, Texas, after teaching for 20 years in Hutchinson, Kansas, is extending their gift to a whole new set of recipients this year. Mary Lynn now serves as the vocal instructor for Calhoun High School and Chuck is the percussion director for Calhoun Schools, grades 6-12, and for the Victoria Independent School District. A combination of changes in the Hutchinson system and the desire to be closer to many of their now-grown children led to the McMichaels' decision to relocate. This article includes an interview with the McMichaels.
