Portrait Artists
Szekely, George
Arts & Activities, v147 n1 p46, 49 Feb 2010
Children's portraits begin as a search for faces in objects, later in drawings, photos and videos. From a child's first line, trekking across a page to the circle representing a round head, young artistic life begins as a search for a portrait. Picturing oneself and the face of others is a lifelong journey. As with other creative ideas in children's playful research, a face needs to be discovered by each artist. Children's portraits are incredibly beautiful when each child searches how to picture themselves. A portrait is not a search for accuracy, but an invention, a finding of new representations in new faces. A portrait speaks about the artist, and not the skills of the presentation. The author describes how students learn about portraits.
