Community Colleges Critical to Manufacturing's Future
Eisen, Phyllis
Community College Journal, v75 n6 p46-47 Jun-Jul 2005
The "Dream It. Do It." campaign was launched by a community that cares about its growth, its future and the future of its young people. Launched as a joint initiative with the National Association of Manufacturers and its Manufacturing Institute in a bold and committed effort to fill the talent shortage looming for U.S. manufacturers, Dream It. Do It. was created because the community, on both the Kansas and Missouri sides felt that without a strong manufacturing base, their region would not grow. The heart of this plan is to engage local communities in an economic region to band together to foster development and robust growth by preparing a technology-competent, high skilled manufacturing workforce. Hopefully, the Dream It. Do It. Careers Campaign will make manufacturing a preferred career choice by 2010. This goal can be accomplished by tapping into the passions and dreams of young people, then connecting them to the outstanding career opportunities in manufacturing. This cannot be done without the nation's community colleges and technical schools. For two decades they have been the favored place for manufacturers across industry sectors to educate and train their own workforces. Now they are more essential than ever in preparing the future workforce with the necessary skills and preparation to work in modern day manufacturing.
