Rewarding Results: The MetLife Foundation Community College Excellence Award
Kazis, Richard; Newton, Anne
Community College Journal, v74 n6 p32-35 Jun-Jul 2004
At the 2004 AACC Annual Convention, Sybil Jacobson, president and CEO of MetLife Foundation, announced the two recipients of the 2004 MetLife Foundation Community College Excellence Award. The award, won by City College of San Francisco (CCSF) and Community College of Denver (CCD), honors two colleges that have made great strides in helping less-advantaged youth and adults to enter college and to meet their educational and career goals. The award is accompanied by a $30,000 gift from MetLife Foundation in recognition of these institutions' pioneering efforts. Selected from nearly 100 institutions that applied for this prestigious award, CCSF and CCD stood out for their strong leadership, clear mission and purpose, and intense commitment from faculty, staff, and community partners. Most of all, these colleges provided convincing evidence of improved outcomes for low-income and first-generation college-going students. Both CCSF and CCD excel in the three areas that the award promotes: (1) Innovation; (2) Institution-wide commitment; and (3) Improvement. Like all the finalists for the Excellence Award, these colleges have made success for students from underserved populations an institution-wide priority. They demonstrate this priority in their mission statements, strategic plans, program and service priorities, professional development investments, and budgeting decisions.
