Keys to Creating a Successful Online Course for Do-It-Yourselfers
Reeder, Craig
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v75 n5 p24-27 Jan 2010
Instructors all around the country are creating online courses for the first time. Yet a standardized format and structure for online courses has not yet emerged. So, for many who are facing this task, it feels like a do-it-yourself project, especially for those who are working in organizations that cannot offer much in the way of guidance and support. In this article, the author shares lessons learned after successfully creating and delivering his first online course. He describes seven "key elements" for creating an effective online course: (1) Keep it personal; (2) Spell it out; (3) Use visual media; (4) Solicit constant feedback; (5) Clarify responsibility for technical issues; (6) Use discussion boards effectively; and (7) Weigh the pros and cons of online exams versus proctored exams. These concepts could apply to any form of instruction in a general sense, but they become far more critical to success in the online environment.
