Jump with Jill
Henderson, Nancy
Exceptional Parent, v40 n2 p22-23 Feb 2010
This article profiles Jill Jayne, who was working as a registered nutritionist in the New York City public school system when she was assigned to a group of 25 urban students in an after-school program in East Harlem. In the spring of 2006, Jayne took her "Jump With Jill" show to the streets outside Central Park, collected tips in a tin pot and, for six hours a day, performed for those who passed by to drum up interest and test her material. The feisty "Rockstar Nutritionist" now travels the country, spreading her message about healthy living via a hip, interactive show in which she dances, sings, and plays electric guitar. Billed as "the Miley Cyrus of nutrition and the Rachel Ray for kids," 28-year-old Jayne has become a sought-after expert. ("Jump With Jill" is geared toward kindergarten through fifth grade; there are also shows for preschoolers, and middle-and high-school students.) During her hour-long show, Jayne uses a sophisticated, up-tempo style and a variety of musical genres to entice every child, including those with special needs, to sing and dance along with her. Jayne's interactive approach is ideal for children with special needs. For one thing, it improves their comprehension and retention abilities.
