The Science of Growth
Fett, Paula
Community College Journal, v80 n3 p26-29 Dec 2009-Jan 2010
In recent years, "math and science" has been the mantra for many educators and business leaders who warn of an urgent need to encourage the pursuit of these and other technological disciplines or risk losing ground in the global economy. Simply emphasizing the need for "math and science" expertise does not, however, encourage innovation and fuel a passion for growth, paramount in the world of science. Cultivating the minds of future leaders is essential to providing the resources that will help make the dreams of today's entrepreneurs a reality. One way to accomplish that goal is to provide opportunities, such as those offered in business and science incubator programs, where entrepreneurs can put their ideas to the test in real-life scenarios. Nurturing startup businesses is the focus of the nation's more than 1,400 business incubator programs, many of which reside on community college campuses. In this article, the author notes that such fledgling entrepreneurs generated annual revenue of more than $17 billion in 2006. The author features New Jersey's Burlington County College (BCC), a leader in the incubation of high-tech and science businesses, with programs in technology and next-generation nanotechnology. BCC's science incubator is designed to nurture startup businesses with the hope that each company will then "graduate" into the business community.
