Kocabas, Ibrahim
Education, v129 n4 p724-733 Sum 2009
This study, in which a descriptive scanning model is used, aims to determine the effects of motivational sources on teachers' motivation levels. The population sample for this study consists of teachers working in the Elazig city center in 2006-2007 academic year. A sample of 225 teachers was randomly selected from this population. Data obtained through the questionnaire was analyzed using SPSS for Windows computer program; the frequencies, percentages and means were calculated, T-Test and One-Way ANOVA techniques were used to analyze data. According to the findings, teachers are mostly motivated by the following factors: a sense of safety in school, pupil achievement, the levels of attraction to the teaching profession, levels of self-reliance, their perception of their status in society, the importance of positive inspection reports, the sense of self-fulfillment, a positive atmosphere in school, positive relationships amongst teachers, their perception of their competencies in their fields, their levels of self-respect, the school's position in the league tables, an appreciation of their achievements and values, effective administration and management, and a sense of security on matters such as health and security, sickness and arrangements for retirement. In addition the following matters were identified as having negative effects on teachers' motivation levels--a competitive climate amongst teachers, the fear of being subject to disciplinary action, and school deficiencies in teaching and learning technologies.
