The Enterprise of the Future

Last year, IBM Corporation conducted a study to determine what the successful enterprise of the future would look like. Its research was based on surveys of 1,130 CEOs, general managers, and senior public sector and business leaders from around the world. A few college and university presidents also were asked to participate. After 30 years as a college president, the author fully understands that colleges and universities have different missions and values from their corporate partners and colleagues. Nevertheless, this study can offer insight on how higher education should be preparing students for the business world and, in some instances, how higher education's own organizations can improve. The study concluded that the successful enterprise of the future will have five major characteristics: (1) hungry for change; (2) innovative beyond customer imagination; (3) globally integrated; (4) disruptive by nature; and (5) genuine, not just generous. In this article, the author discloses the five characteristics that will mark a successful 21st century enterprise and how they can be incorporated into curricula. (Contains 2 notes.)
