A New Morrill Act: Higher Education Anchors the "Remaking of America"
Cantor, Nancy
Presidency, v12 n3 p16-22 Fall 2009
One might think that a global financial crisis would be no time for college and university presidents to think expansively. Hunkering down is the more natural reaction to a threat of the magnitude that the economy continues to present. But expansive thought is exactly what higher education leaders need right now--not necessarily the kind that grows their physical plant or their list of program offerings, but a fundamental re-examination of what American higher education is all about and where each of their institutions fits into that ideal. Advocating expansive thinking as a response to President Barack Obama's call to "remake America" for today's knowledge economy, the author contends that postsecondary institutions are community anchors, profoundly affecting area prospects and prosperity. She stresses that the work of college and university leaders in helping remake America starts at home, so it makes sense to examine their institutional and regional histories to determine where their best opportunities now lie.
