Johnson, Alex
Presidency, v12 n2 p26-31 Spr 2009
What makes a college or university president? Coming from a historically underrepresented group, the author discusses his own path to the presidency, and how various people and personal experiences have shaped him along the way. He offers a piece of advice on how most presidencies are approached--through the academic ranks. Critical to achieving a presidency, however, is augmenting professional roles with examples from accomplished individuals, engaging in professional development programs, and expanding relationships outside academia. Ralph Hexter, Shirley Strum Kenny, and Les Wong provide additional insight and perspective.
