The Urban University: Catalyst for Renewal
Reid, Irvin D.
Presidency, v11 n3 p30-34 Fall 2008
This article features Wayne State University, a large urban research university in Detroit. The author believes that Wayne state has the potential as a regional center of expertise to do great things for Detroit and the surrounding counties--from strengthening K-12 education to promoting the economic development that Michigan so badly needed. As Michigan's only urban research university, Wayne state plays a special role as a catalyst for helping resolve the social and economic issues facing residents of modern large cities--both in this country and around the world. An urban university means so much to the people of the city it serves, and no other institution or group can play the role that a university is uniquely and distinctly equipped to play. In this article, the author demonstrates how a university can add vitality to its surrounding community.
