Raising Our Sights
Humphries, Chris
Adults Learning, v20 n10 p8-11 Jun 2009
Today, people are facing unparalleled and unpredictable challenges. After 15 years of growth, people are in a global recession that may be the deepest for 75 years. Unemployment is rising, and thousands of people throughout the UK are suffering the very personal tragedy of losing their jobs. Certainty is a commodity in even shorter supply than credit, but of one thing people can be sure: the impact of this recession on one's society and one's economy will be far-reaching. To secure economic renewal--to emerge from the recession stronger, more adaptable and more competitive--will demand immediate, strong and concerted action. Making serious headway on the skills and jobs agenda during the current recession will be exceedingly difficult. The author argues that, unless people take immediate and concerted action they will fall further behind their international competitors. The author presents five key priorities that drive policy and practice in the UK over the next five years. These priorities will underpin one's work and the author believes they should also be the focus of joined-up government policy within and between England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
