Danusia Latosinski on the Work that Won City College Norwich This Year's AoC President's Award
Latosinski, Danusia
Adults Learning, v20 n7 p30 Mar 2009
The transition from school to college can be a daunting experience for any young adult. But for someone who suffers from Asperger Syndrome (AS)--an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) which affects how a person makes sense of the world, processes information and relates to other people--adapting to new surroundings and meeting new people is an even greater challenge. Around one in 100 people in the UK suffer from an ASD. At City College Norwich, a unique learning environment, named by the students the RUG Room, is designed to provide all-day support for people with AS. The purpose of the RUG Room is to encourage communication and social interaction between students and support staff in a naturalistic way. The college also offers a discrete course called Phoenix Purple for people with AS who would struggle to cope on mainstream courses. These initiatives, the RUG Room and Phoenix Purple, have made City College Norwich the national winner of the 2009 Association of Colleges' (AoC) President's Award.
