Outside In: Reaching In to Bring Kids Out
Fay, Susan
Reclaiming Children and Youth, v17 n2 p31-34 Sum 2008
Located on 350 majestically wooded acres in southern Michigan, Montcalm School for Boys is a therapeutic boarding school with a pedigree that goes back nearly a century. Built on the tenets of Starr Commonwealth, a nationally recognized organization for the treatment of troubled youth, "Outside In" is Montcalm School's private innovative residential treatment program for boys who find the daily give and take of normal interpersonal interaction a baffling, terrifying mystery. For a number of root causes, including Asperger's Syndrome, these boys have had great difficulty forming reciprocal relationships. While the severity of the symptoms may vary, students are typically unable to decipher social cues and often exhibit behavior that is deemed eccentric and inappropriate. These kids must learn intellectually what most people know intuitively. This article describes how the "Outside In" program helps kids understand how authentic relationships work.
