Within the project "Engaging mathematics for all learners", led and funded by the QCA, the mathematics team at the Royal Institution of Great Britain (Ri) looked into how mathematical tasks usually reserved for the "gifted and talented" can be used in the mainstream classroom with a wide range of learners to address core mathematical skills, increase confidence and introduce key mathematical concepts. The tasks were developed with three teachers at Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys in Greenwich, London, and trialed with a range of learners from Y7 to sixth form at various levels of attainment. In this article, the authors devise activities based around 3-D geometry and a school trip to the "Gherkin".
