Hurt People Hurt People: Female Bully-Victims
Edmondson, Lynne; Zeman, Laura Dreuth
Reclaiming Children and Youth, v18 n3 p24-28 2009
Common in the research literature on bullying is the dichotomy of bullying and victim behavior. The present definition of a bully is a person who has engaged in repeated acts of aggression or harm to persons over whom he or she has power. The literature on bullies examines gender differences at length. However, the bully-victim literature has yet to examine female bully-victim experiences. This article aims to provide new insights and unique experiences from the perspective of female bully-victims. Participants in this study are divided into three groups, girls in the first two groups according to their grade (4th-5th and 6th-8th) and the adult women in the third group. In order to guide the discussion, the interviewers began with four basic open-ended discussion topics that addressed physical bullying behavior and victim history. The information that emerged from these focus groups is presented in statements that voice unique bully-victim experiences and provide insight as to how these women understand this phenomenon. Findings indicate the phenomenon was more than a mixture of separate behaviors called "bully" and "victim" among participants in this study. Specifically, these findings present an understanding of female bully-victims that includes continually acting-out as victims and bullies at home and school, rather than bullying at school and victimization at home.
