The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) establishes standards for what effective teachers should know and be able to do. In light of recent research demonstrating differences between the student outcomes in physical education of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and non-NBCTs, the purpose of this article is to describe what effective teachers do in terms of the standards set by NBPTS, encourage readers to reflect upon their own effectiveness, and offer some suggestions for improvement.
