A PESA Story
Walker, James
Educational Philosophy and Theory, v41 n7 p752-756 Dec 2009
As the author thinks back over his association with Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia (PESA), particularly during the 1970s and 1980s when he was most active in the organization, three themes emerge. First, the author feels immense gratitude for the many good friends and colleagues whose company he found both enjoyable and stimulating, and from whose encouragement and support he benefited greatly in his philosophical development and academic career. Second, there was, for the author and some others, the problematic relationship between philosophy and education, and more particularly between philosophy and philosophy of education. Third, in at least the first decade of PESA's life, there was the impact on PESA of the social, cultural and political controversies of the time. In this article, the author provides some reflections on how these themes were interwoven over the years of his experience with PESA.
