Pyramid of Interventions: Results of a School Counselor's Action Research Study at One Suburban Middle School
Miller, Nicholas J.
Georgia School Counselors Association Journal, v1 n1 p16-26 2008
This paper examines the implementation of the Pyramid of Interventions (POI) at a suburban Georgia Middle School through an examination of teacher understanding, assessment of overall effectiveness, and the need for further professional development. The Pyramid of Interventions is the response to intervention (RTI) component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) reauthorized in 2006. Multiple states, systems and schools have implemented RTI since the reauthorization as an addition to discrepancy based evaluations for identifying students with disabilities. This action research study (ARS) examines the teachers' perspective of its implementation, specifically the school counselor's involvement in identifying interventions for students and teachers. The results indicate a successful implementation with future opportunities for further research. (Contains 3 tables.)
