The Kids Can't Read
Brunner, Judy
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v75 n4 p32-36 Dec 2009
Reading instruction at the secondary level is important, and it is necessary. Students need to be taught how to organize ideas, question authors' conclusions, make predictions, draw inferences, and use and apply the information they learn to a variety of situations. Getting students excited about reading expository text is possible, and it involves working smarter, not harder. Teachers need to provide direct instruction about why the material is important and prepare students to succeed. Professional development in literacy and use of the latest research and strategies ensure student success. In this article, the author describes some strategies that can help simplify a reading assignment and provide a more rewarding learning opportunity for everyone, teachers and students alike.
