Problem Solvers: Problem--Light It up! and Solutions--Flags by the Numbers
Hall, Shaun
Teaching Children Mathematics, v16 n4 p196-203 Nov 2009
A simple circuit is created by the continuous flow of electricity through conductors (copper wires) from a source of electrical energy (batteries). "Completing a circuit" means that electricity flows from the energy source through the circuit and, in the case described in this month's problem, causes the light bulb tolight up. The presence of either dead batteries or burned-out light bulbs prevents a completecircuit. Experience with testing the effects of various modifications may help students understand the context of the problem. This article involves probability in the context of electrical circuits. A problem solvers activity sheet is included. (Contains 6 figures.)
